DESCRIPTION
Plant Profile
Bel is scientifically known as Aegle marmelos. It is a medium-sized, deciduous tree. It belongs to Rutaceae family. The tree is distinguished by its slender branches, trifoliate leaves, and sharp thorns. The tree produces a unique globose fruit. The fruit is enclosed in a smooth, woodyshell. The shell is greenish-yellow in color. Inside the rind lies a fragrant, orange pulp. The pulp is sticky, aromatic resin with numerous small seeds. Indigenous to the Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia. It is widely distributed across India’s dry deciduous forests. The tree is found both in the wild and as a cultivated species near rural homesteads.
Healthcare Perspective
In Ayurveda, Bel (Aegle marmelos) is highly valued. It is known for its versatile role in supporting gastrointestinal health and metabolic balance. Traditionally, the fruit is used at different stages of maturity. Each stage has specific concerns. The unripe fruit is often valued for its "Grahi" (binding) properties. It is traditionally used to support healthy bowel movements. Whereas, the ripe fruit is recognized for its "Rechana" (laxative) qualities. It is used to facilitate smooth digestion and relieve occasional constipation.
Phytochemical Composition
The phytochemical composition of Bel (Aegle marmelos) is a complex matrix. It consists of bioactive secondary metabolites. The most significant active markers are the coumarins, notably marmelosin, marmelide, and psoralen. Marmelosin is frequently highlighted in botanical research. It is the primary agent responsible for the fruit’s traditional association with gastrointestinal health. It also contains a high concentration of tannins. Furthermore, the fruit contains unique alkaloids such as aegeline and marmeline. They have been investigated for their role in supporting metabolic health. The pulp is also rich in pectin. It is a soluble dietary fiber. It acts as a natural prebiotic and contributes to the mucilaginous texture of the fruit. This mucilage is traditionally valued for its soothing effect on the digestive lining. Beyond these specialized compounds, Bel is a rich source of nutritional antioxidants. These include carotenoids, flavonoids, and phenolic acids. They support the body's natural defense against oxidative stress.
